In May 1957, The Soviet Union launched their first rocket, R-7, but it failed after just 20 seconds. The next rocket was sent into space in October the same year. This time, the name was “Sputnik 1”. When they figured out it worked, they tried again in November. But this time they sent a dog in the rocket. The dog's name was Laika, but she died in space, about four to seven hours after the rocket left the earth.

The USSR was the first nation to send a man into space. on April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin travelled the Earth once. The flight lasted 1 hour 48 minutes. In the same year an American satronaut entered space, but the flight lasted only 15 minutes.
